It’s no secret that life is full of challenges. However, when you dwell on the negatives, you lose sight of the best things in life — love, friendships, family, nature, and even little things like a warm cup of coffee or the sound of raindrops. Adopting a positive mindset simply means you’re focusing more on life’s positive aspects rather than ignoring all the bad parts.

1. Practice Gratitude and Mindfulness to Rewire Your Brain
To survive, the brain constantly scans for threats, predisposing you to a negative mindset. Gratitude can help your brain shift gears from what’s wrong in your life to what’s great about it. Think of it like a workout that strengthens your brain to appreciate the good things in life. In fact, even simply writing what you’re thankful for can increase life satisfaction.
If you’re not a fan of journaling, you can simply be mindful of the present. Pull your thoughts back from “what-ifs” or worries. Observe your thoughts from a distance as if they’re passing clouds. Use your five senses to ground yourself in the moment — find five objects with the color green, listen to the sounds of birds and the wind or feel the texture of your clothes.
These are just a few sensory activities you can easily do when you find yourself feeling overwhelmed. Additionally, practice mindful breathing by calling attention to your breath.
2. Connect with Nature to Find Your Calm
Stepping away from your screens and going out into nature is one of the best ways to reconnect with yourself. You don’t have to go on a huge trekking trip for this. You can go on a walk, visit your local park or just appreciate the sunset.
Embrace the Costa Rican concept of “pura vida,” where you shift your priorities to things that actually matter — your health, your loved ones and living life according to your values. It’s a way of assuring yourself that everything is all right.
For example, when there’s a traffic jam, instead of seeing the situation as a world-shattering event, you just shrug off the annoyance. It’s still inconvenient, but it’s not the end of the world. By choosing to shine a light on what matters, you teach your brain to enjoy the experience of life.
3. Reframe Negative Thoughts
As mentioned earlier, our brains are naturally inclined to focus on negative things. In order to change your behaviors, you need to be mindful of your thoughts and actions. Learn about cognitive reframing, which encourages more productive reactions to a situation instead of loading it with negative assumptions and thoughts.
One of the best ways to do this is by challenging your own negative thinking and providing alternative interpretations of events that might cause you distress. Familiarize yourself with cognitive distortions, which warp reality and lead to negative thoughts. Some examples of this include:
-
- Catastrophizing: Believing that the worst-case scenario you imagined will happen
- Overgeneralizing: Thinking you know what will happen based on an unpleasant event
- Filtering: Overfocusing on one negative aspect
- Blaming: Seeking control by taking the responsibility off yourself and putting it on others
- Jumping to conclusions: Judging a situation or person right away
- Black-and-white thinking: Believing things are all good or all bad with no in-between
4. Savor the Small Joys You Already Have
Instead of rushing through life, savor the moments and the simple things that bring you joy. Three ways you can do this are through anticipation, mindfulness of the present and reminiscing.
Anticipatory savoring can look like jotting down things you’re looking forward to. This amps up the feeling of excitement and joy. You can write down special occasions such as holidays, reunions, weekends or concerts.
For full benefit, anticipate even the small joys of life, like a warm shower, a sweet treat or your bed with freshly washed sheets. Then, you can practice savoring the moment during these times, using your five senses to ground yourself.
Reminiscing is a powerful tool, as it can help you look back on happy and positive memories. Some simple ways to reminisce would be to scroll back through photos of fun trips, listen to your favorite songs and even revisit places you enjoyed, like restaurants. By practicing these habits, you’re essentially multiplying the joy you experience over time.
Celebrating Life With a Positive Mindset
Challenges are a constant of life, but so are joyful experiences. To protect your mind when facing challenges, adopting a positive mindset can be beneficial. This can help shield you from entirely focusing on problems.
Practicing gratitude and mindfulness, reconnecting with nature, reframing negative thoughts, and savoring the small joys of life are just some of the ways you can incorporate a more positive outlook into your day-to-day life. Try practicing them, see which ones stick and stay consistent to shift your mindset.
